Growth From A Hard Place

About the work: Jane Cheek’s signal box illustration, “From The Ground Up” imagines plant life persevering and growing from unlikely foundations, serving as a metaphor for human resilience. Cheek is a mixed-media and installation artist creating large-scale works that explore joy, memory, and transformation. Inspired by personal experiences and a deep connection to nature, her practice emphasizes moments of happiness through vivid, hyperbolic forms. Her process is rooted in reclaiming and repurposing materials, transforming what is discarded into monumental artworks with a drawing and digital practice that imagines her sculpture work in two dimensional form.

Pollinating Possibilities

Series of aluminum standees - Smith Elementary Art Courtyard installation

Abut the work: This mural design, created specifically for the art garden at Smith Magnet  Elementary, draws inspiration from the natural world, the school’s vibrant identity, and the rich history of modern and postmodern art. At the heart of the design are abstracted, biomorphic plant forms—organic, playful shapes that reference the visual language of artists like Henri Matisse, Henry Moore, Hilda of Klimt, and Ruth Asawa, as well as postmodern and contemporary artists such as Elizabeth Murray, Alma Thomas, and Yayoi Kusama. These forms are painted in bold, bright colors to spark imagination and evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity.

Scattered among the flora are bees in joyful flight—an homage to the school’s bee logo. These bees act as messengers and makers, connecting each abstract bloom to the next. The presence of bees reinforces a metaphor at the core of this piece: just as bees pollinate plants, the school pollinates young minds—with knowledge, creativity, and care.

Hexagonal patterns—subtle nods to honeycomb structures—appear within the plant shapes in analogous color palettes, further connecting the mural to the school's identity while also offering a geometric counterpoint to the organic curves of the forms. This interplay mirrors the balance between structure and imagination that defines a thriving learning environment.

The mural is not just decorative—it’s a celebration of growth, community, and transformation. It reflects the garden's purpose as a space where creativity blossoms and where students are invited to think expansively, connect deeply, and contribute meaningfully to the world around them.
